On March 4, Shepard Fairey will guest star on the 23rd Season of the iconic television series, The Simpsons in an episode titled, “Exit Though The Kwik-E-Mart.” In order to get back at his dad, Bart goes undercover as a graffiti street artist and plasters Homer’s unflattering image all over Springfield. But one night, Bart and Milhouse get caught in the act by established street artists Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal (guest voicing as themselves), and to Bart’s surprise, they invite him to exhibit his satirical artwork in his very own gallery show. Meanwhile, a hip, new health food superstore opens in Springfield that threatens to put Apu and the Kwik-E-Mart out of business. In speaking about the honor of being able to be a part of such a groundbreaking program Fairey commented, “part of being on ‘The Simpsons,’ is you’re being honored as a reference point in culture. But you also can’t be too sensitive about that part of culture being made fun of. There’s irony that comes with something outsider becoming insider. And they do a great job of examining that.”

Curatorial Advisor Medvin Sobio of the Visual Arts Collective Viejas Del Mercado, 33third Los Angeles and Mid City Arts expresses the importance of a cultural exchange and building a platform for communication and reconciliation through Public Art. Art’s Manager Meghan Coleman explains the narratives behind the work from some of this year’s Artists, while Photographer Martha Cooper shares her unique perspective, having seen the graffiti and street art movement expand in the 1970′s from the New York City train yards to its state today as one of the largest art movements in the world.

Having just graduated from art school this year, Gaia is the youngest artist to join the Wynwood Walls. For the Wynwood Doors, a portrait gallery of murals within the collection, Gaia painted a mural of Henry Flagler, the powerful oil and railroad tycoon who is responsible for modern day Florida. With this, he continues a practice of implanting modernist figures into landscapes that they have drastically changed for better or worse.

Style Wars x The Outtakes Project

Style Wars was originally released in 1983, as a 69-minute documentary on hip-hop and graffiti culture. Here we are some decades later and pieces of abandoned footage are now beginning to come to the forefront. Out of 30 hours of film, only a sliver made the final cut, which of course leaves a plethora of intriguing outtakes. A new Kick Starter has begun in hopes of raising $28,000 USD to make a DVD box set of all the outtakes and unused footage.
